WILLIAM EATON: HIS MILITARY ROLE AND DIPLOMATIC ACTIVITY IN TUNISIA AND WEST TRIPOLI 1764-1805

The research studies the personality of the American military and diplomat William Eaton, who is considered one of the first figures to represent American colonial interests in the countries of the Maghreb,The research introduces William Eaton himself by reviewing the stages of his birth, upbringing, and early professional activity, as well as his military service in the United States of America for the period 1793 - 1798. Then, the two researchers discuss the most important transition in Eaton’s life, which was his appointment as the first consul of the United States of America in the state of Tunisia, and how he was able to achieve American interests and convince the Tunisian side to introduce amendments to the Treaty of Peace and Friendship to be signed by both parties in 1799. Eaton was not satisfied with using his skills in Rather, he used the military side of his personality when the crisis occurred between his country’s government and the western state of Tripoli, as he assumed leadership of the American ground military campaign that was sent against the government of Yusuf Pasha al-Qaramanli in 1805, and this is what the two researchers highlighted in the fourth and final part of their research. Perhaps among the most important findings reached by the researchers is that William Eaton was known for his colonial tendency, which he reflected, whether through his military service or his diplomatic work, and this was evident in his official addresses and secret reports to his country’s government about the nature of the internal conditions in the countries of the Arab Maghreb and how to exploit them in the interest of strengthening influence. America in the region.
