AN ETYMOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE TERMS RELATED TO TRADITIONAL CRAFTS IN THE SULTANATE OF OMAN; THE TRADITIONAL PRODUCT NAMES AS EXAMPLE

Etymological studies are of great importance in examining the linguistic heritage and clarifying its roots and connections to the standard Arabic. However, etymological dictionaries are still scarce in the Arabic library. This research seeks to highlight the importance of etymological studies in rooting the linguistic heritage, and reproducing its connections to the classical language, through an applied experiment on a group of product names in traditional crafts in the Sultanate of Oman. The research will develop a historical identification card for each word through an etymological study that shows its source and the origin from which it descended. It distinguishes words with Arabic roots, and foreign words that were borrowed from other languages, if they exist. Then it studies the phonetic and semantic changes that these words underwent until they reached their current form.
