THE ROLE OF ELECTRONIC EDUCATIONAL WEBSITES IN DEVELOPING THE COMPETENCIES OF MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS

More recently, the world is witnessing rapid developments in all aspects of social, economic, and cultural life, driven by the technological revolution. This puts education play a significant role in providing the requirements for advancement and prosperity in front of electronic challenges. The latter imposes education to keep pace with these developments via exploiting technology for its benefit in the teaching-learning process. The teacher as an essential element in the teaching-learning process needs to master certain competencies. Subsequently, he constantly seeks to improve his own competencies to raise the level of the intended performance. The proliferation of electronic educational websites has provided opportunities for teachers to obtain knowledge and skills to cater for the changing needs of professional developments, and facilitate collaborative communication with peers. This study aimed to identify the role of electronic educational websites in enhancing the competencies of teachers, and investigate whether this role brings differences in the light of specialization, gender and experience. To this end, a questionnaire was elaborated and administered to a sample of 200 middle school teachers. The results showed that teachers state that electronic educational websites have an important role in developing their competencies, and there were no significant differences in the teachers' views towards the role of educational websites in enhancing their competencies due to specialization, gender, and experience
